Typically, EMC filters are sized to provide the required attenuation so that the current spectrum goes below the standards. The interference may be common mode and/or differential mode, which requires separation of the interference modes in the design study in order to have an optimised topological choice of passive filtering. Consequently, an EMC model of the converter is essential. However, the topological choice of hybrid and active filters is not necessarily based on mode separation.
